Merry Christmas

A few weeks ago Giuliana got to meet Santa Claus! She didn't cry, but she wasn't so sure about him:)

That night we went to St. Paul's Church to see a visiting Norweigan boy's choir.

The church was beautiful,

but it was very cold and crowded.

So we had to stay bundled up.......

And Kelly had to find a seat anywhere he could get it....A confessional:)

Getting Ready for Christmas

Because we are teaching at an American school we got Thanksgiving and Friday off! So Friday morning we went to some friend's house and I made my first advent wreath. It was so easy and it looks so pretty! Kelly and Giuliana went with me because the A&M and Texas game was supposed to be on ESPN. The guys were going to watch the game while we made the wreaths. Well the game wasn't on so the guys baby sat while we went to work.

Taking a little nap before we walked home in the cold! It was 18 F!
When we got home we started to set up our apartment for Christmas. Giuliana watched while Kelly set up the tree.

After a long day we had dinner! Thanks Aunt Dacey for our cute reindeer bib!

Thanksgiving

We were lucky this year to have 2 Thanksgivings! Our church had a Thanksgiving dinner the Saturday before.

On Thanksgiving we were invited to join the Finkbeiner/Glaab family for dinner. It was a wonderful dinner. We are so blessed to have such great friends in Vilnius! After stuffing ourselves with turkey, potatoes, stuffing, etc..we played dance off on the Wii. I was beat by a 5th grader! Then we ended the night with a slice of pumpkin and pecan pie!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Macedonia via Austria

On November 12, Kelly and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary. Kelly had a training scheduled in Macedonia that weekend so Giuliana and I decided to go along! We headed out on a Thursday afternoon and took our 1st flight to Vienna. We had a 7 hour layover so we took a train into the city and took in the sights. It is a beautiful city! We enjoyed sausages and beer from a street vendor and I had my 1st ever roasted chestnuts.  After our tour of Vienna we went back to the airport and caught a midnight flight to Skopje, Macedonia. We arrived at our hotel around 3am and Kelly was up the following morning at 7am for training! Giuliana and I got to sleep in. On our first day in Skopje, G and I walked around the town looking for interesting sights. Well, we ate at McDonalds and went back to the hotel for a nap. I know what you’re thinking….Jennifer’s Tour Guide of Macedonia will be published this fallJ That night, we went out to eat with the group from Kelly’s training. They took us to a traditional Macedonian restaurant. The cuisine consisted of assorted meats and cheeses and some kind of very strong rubbing alcohol they try to pass off as brandy. I had one sip and could not finish my drink, but I bet you can guess who did finish their drink! The beer was much better. We were serenaded by some men dressed in traditional dress.  That is how we spent our 5th anniversary. It was a wonderful night!

The next day when Kelly went to training I decided to be a little more adventurous and we ate at the Burger King. Just kidding, I didn’t eat there. G and I took a taxi outside of the city to Lake Matka. The taxi driver drove us on a one way road through little villages and alongside a beautiful river. Lake Matka is supposed to be one of the countries most popular attractions and on the brochure it has pictures of a lively street area and restaurant that overlook the lake. When the taxi driver dropped us off on the side of the road in front of a restaurant that was under construction I was a little confused. There was no one around and I wasn’t sure what we would do. So I walked down the side of the hill to the river and took some pictures of Giuliana. I walked around the bend in the river and saw a small restaurant on the side of the mountain so we went there for lunch. After a few glasses of wine, we went exploring some more. We found a monastery and a kayak maneuvering course on the river. Maybe the monks do that for fun?? (Our Sister of the River Sport Monastery. Who is the patron saint of river sports?) After that, I found another small cafĂ© and I had dessert and another few glasses of wine waiting on the taxi. I never found Lake Matka or the lively street area, but we had fun none the less.

That night we went on a city tour of Skopje with Kelly’s group. We ended the tour with a nice Macedonian dinner. We got back to the hotel and were up only a few hours later to catch our 4 am flight back home only to discover at the airport that our flight was booked for the following day with no possible way of getting out any sooner. So, we spent the next day hanging out in our hotel room. (I bet you can’t wait to buy our guide book) We finally made it home Monday afternoon to Vilnius.

Fall Break in Poland

For our fall break this year Kelly, Giuliana, our friend Krista and I took off for Poland. Lithuania is just north of Poland and we decided instead of flying to take the train. Probably the last time we take trains through eastern Europe, but at least I didn't have to stress the whole time about flying. Our first leg of the trip was a 9 hour train ride to Warsaw. We changed trains once, which was a little crazy when we realized thestroller was too wide and had to quickly take the wheels off. Another reason I do not wish to go on trains again is the whole toilet situation. A whole in the ground is worse than finding a tree somewhere! We made it to Warsaw late Sunday night and wound around through the underground train station until we found an exit. We were SO glad to be off of the train and in a nice bed!

Our second day of the trip we took another train to Krakow. November 1st is All Saints Day. It is a national holiday and everyone visits the cemetary where their relatives who have passed away are burried. The sell candles everywhere and the people bring the candles and place them on their relatives graves. We went to the cemetary that night in Krakow and it was an amazing sight. It was a huge cemetary and not one grave was unlit.
That day we walked around the Old Town of Krakow and enjoyed the beautiful city. We had lunch at a traditional Polish restaurant and Giuliana played the piano for us.

Our second day in Krakow we took a bus to Auschwitz. There are two parts to Auschwitz. The main camp and a larger camp they built later. The 2nd camp is where the people were brought in on a train and many were sent immediately to their death. It was very difficult walking around both camps, especially with Giuliana. Imagining the things that happened to families is just heart breaking. These are a few pictures Kelly took. Visitors were encouraged to take pictures and share them so as to never forget the atrocities that took place there.

Bus ride back to Krakow

Doing our last bit of shopping in Krakow before we leave.
On Wednesday we headed back to Warsaw for the last 2 days of our trip. We were tired of traveling on trains at this point (and we still had another 9 hour train ride to look forward to on Friday back to Vilnius!) It was rainy and cold in Warsaw but we still did some walking around. It was completely destroyed during WWII and the old town was rebuilt to its original form. There were these waffle shops all over the place and I had to stop and get one! It was great! We also enjoyed some American things like Starbucks. On Friday morning we headed to the train station for our long journey home. When we arrived home to Vilnius we were all happy to be home again!
